Hoop Group Elite Camp notebook: Jefferson’s Lynch taking time with recruitment

READING, Pa. – Don’t look for an early commitment out of Thomas Jefferson guard Jaquan (Son Son) Lynch. The 6-foot combo guard, known for his toughness and clutch shot-making, has been hearing from a lot of mid-major schools, but he plans to be patient and possibly not commit until the spring.

“After we win the city championship next year, more offers still might come,” he said at Hoop Group’s Elite Camp, smiling as he repeated the prediction he often made over the winter. “I should have a good season. I’m not in a rush.”

Lynch has been hearing a lot from Stony Brook and Florida International, specifically former New Heights athletic director Kimani Young. Eastern Illinois, Drexel, Hofstra, Quinnipiac and Canisius, among others, are also recruiting the Brooklyn native, an All-City second team selection by The Post over the winter who led Jefferson to the PSAL Class AA championship game at Madison Square Garden.

Lincoln’s Whitehead has MVP in his sights: Isaiah Whitehead had the option of attending the Reebok Breakout Challenge in Philadelphia or Hoop Group Elite Camp. While Reebok drew bigger names, Whitehead went with Hoop Group out of loyalty.

“I told them I was coming here first and I missed it last year,” Lincoln’s highly recruited rising junior guard said. “I had summer school.”

Based on the first two days, it was a wise decision. Whitehead’s team is 2-0 and he has illustrated why he is considered by many the city’s top prospects, impressing with his ability to get to the basket and perimeter jump shot. He is a front-runner for MVP honors.

“That’s the goal,” Whitehead said. “I just want to win.”
