Alderson plans to call up lefty reliever Edgin

As a way to better gauge what they have internally before delving deeper into the relief trade market, the Mets plan to bring lefty Josh Edgin to the majors early in the second half, The Post has learned.

They also are weighing whether to take a look at Jenrry Mejia and/or Elvin Ramirez this month.

The Mets already have called up Pedro Beato as they try to be positive they do not have solutions in their own system before using prospects to address their bullpen shortcomings. This is particularly true because the Mets feel they are not at a point in their development at which they can deal significant pieces from their system. Thus, it will be hard to make a helpful acquisition.

Edgin impressed manager Terry Collins in spring training and has been under regular consideration to be summoned as the Mets have tried to find a second lefty to join Tim Byrdak. Edgin was 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 33 appearances for Buffalo. Lefties were hitting just .218 against him.

The Mets had been hoping Mejia would be a midseason bullpen asset a year removed from Tommy John surgery. But his transition has not been going great. In his first eight appearances at Triple-A since switching to the pen, Mejia had a 10.00 ERA and a .357 batting average against. There is a split within the organization on how quickly — if at all — to summon him to the majors.

As for Ramirez, he is 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA between Double- and Triple-A. But the hard-throwing right-hander bombed in his earlier major league cameo, pitching to a 9.00 ERA in five games as he walked eight in seven innings.

The Mets have identified relief, a righty bat and an upgrade at catcher as their key areas of need. Among the relievers they are keeping an eye on are Milwaukee’s Francisco Rodriguez, Oakland’s Grant Balfour and Houston’s Brett Myers.
