2 LI cops injured in DWI wrong-way crash

A drunken driver going the wrong way late at night on a Long Island road crashed head on into a police car, injuring two Suffolk County officers, authorities said yesterday.

One cop had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with a gash to the head and back and shoulder injuries. He remained hospitalized yesterday.

His partner was treated for back, neck and shoulder injuries at the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and released.

Police said Rony Santos, 42, was headed west in Long Island Avenue’s eastbound lane in his 2000 Audi at 10:06 p.m. Saturday when he hit the squad car near Wellwood Avenue, not far from his Wyandanch home.

Santos, who was treated at Good Samaritan for minor injuries, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
