Agent for Mets’ Wheeler says prospect is ready for bigs

The Mets aren’t ready to bring Zack Wheeler to the majors yet, but his agent is.

After watching his client throw at Georgia Tech on Thursday, Al Goetz wrote on Twitter yesterday: “If the Mets have [five] starters better than what I saw from [Wheeler] yesterday, they will win the East #bigleagueready.”

Goetz is a former scout with the Braves and player in the Tigers’ organization and his opinion probably won’t do much to alter the plans of general manager Sandy Alderson or the rest of the Mets’ hierarchy.

That’s especially true with Shaun Marcum now signed to a one-year deal worth $4 million. The contract could go to $6 million with incentives. Marcum is expected to join Johan Santana, Jon Niese, Matt Harvey and Dillon Gee in the rotation.

The Mets are expected to finish closer to the bottom of the division with the Marlins than the top with Atlanta, Washington and the Phillies.
