Sony and Panasonic are jointly developing new disc technology that can hold up to 1 terabyte of data.
Even though the world is moving towards cloud and flash storage, that doesn’t mean companies are halting development on larger optical discs.
When the PlayStation 3 first came out with Blu-ray support, it opened up a more detailed gaming experience, allowing for lifelike graphics. This has extended further with mind-blowing detail in the latest Xbox One and PlayStation 4 graphics. Having up to 1TB to store your games on will make this detail leap again.
The new standard is named Archival Disc, and Sony expects to launch 300GB discs sometime in 2015, eventually expanding to 500GB and 1TB discs.
Although Blu-ray has never taken off like DVD did, the two companies are treating Archival Discs as the successor to Blu-ray and the next generation of optical media.
At this stage, the first use will be in film and possibly in data centers as a cheap way to store streaming games.
