Teacher seriously injured after being run over in front of LI high school

A teacher was severely injured after being run down in front of a Long Island high school by a 28-year-old driver police say was swerving wildly and who then crashed head-on into another car, also seriously injuring a couple in that vehicle.

The unidentified man, who was also injured, was charged with reckless driving in the 10 a.m. crash outside North Shore High School in Glen Cove, police said.

“He struck a pedestrian who was crossing Glen Cove Avenue legally, veered off and struck a Volkswagen with a husband and wife in their mid 60s,” said Nassau Officer Michael Bitsko at the scene.

A source said detectives are investigating why the driver “was weaving across the road – if he was texting, playing with the radio or is a DWI.”

The suspect, the teacher and the couple, were all reported in serious condition at area hospitals and the injured woman was undergoing emergency surgery.
