Chinatown bus service Fung Wah shut down by feds

Fung Wah — the popular and long-running Chinatown bus service that offered hourly trips to Boston for $15 — was shut down for good yesterday by the feds.

The low-cost carrier was under investigation after a surprise safety inspection by Massachusetts authorities uncovered serious safety problems, including cracks in the frame near the axles.

The feds had initially ordered the company to take its fleet off of the road, but allowed it to lease other vehicles to continue service.

But yesterday, the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ordered the company to cease all operations immediately.

“Bus companies that jeopardize public safety and refuse to cooperate with our investigators have no place on the road,” said outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
