PLAX PROBLEM

Just as Eli Manning was last weekend, more and more it’s looking as though Plaxico Burress will be a game-time decision for the Giants tomorrow in Washington.

The receiver returned to practice yesterday on a limited basis after missingthe previous three days with a right ankle injury. He’s listed as questionable, and neither Burress nor the Giants would shed any light on his status. “He was limited,” Tom Coughlin said.

“He did some things. He didn’t complete the full practice, but he did a few things and we’ll see. It’s going to be one of those deals depending on how he feels on game day.”

Burress, usually gregarious, surprisingly offered even less than his tightlipped coach.

“I’m not talking about me. I’ll talk about the game,” said Burress, who eschewed a golf cart after practice and walking down the tunnel to the locker room. “(The win) is very important for us. I’ve never started out 0-3 and I definitely don’t want to start now.”

Despite missing time early in training camp while recovering from surgery on his left ankle, Burress is tied for the NFL lead with four touchdowns. That’s a lot of possibly lost production, compounded by the fact rookie receiver Steve Smith (shoulder) is out as well.

Anthony Mix is Burress’backup at the position, and forgotten man Sinorice Moss is listed as Amani Toomer’s backup and can play the third receiver spot. David Tyree (wrist) practiced all week and is probable.

“I didn’t see him (Burress) do too much, but what he did, he did OK,” said Mix, whose 6-5, 235- pound frame mirrors that of Burress.

Limited to special teams in the opener, Mix got in on 23 plays against Green Bay, with three fourth-quarter catches for 39 yards.

“I think I’ll be called upon to go into the game,” Mix said. “I got in [the] fourth quarter (Sunday), had a couple of catches. For me it was a confidence builder, every catch you make. I think I did pretty good. I didn’t do great, (but) I played pretty well.”

After Antonio Pierce blasted an air horn during an interview, Tiki Barber weighed in Thursday night on Sirius Radio.

“Now that things are struggling, first he runs away from it early in the week and now he’s refusing

to answer questions by being completely disrespectful to a group of people who’re just trying to do their job,” Barber said.

Told of Barber’s comments, as well as Shannon Sharpe calling Pierce’s behavior childish and trivial, Pierce snapped, “Do they play for the New York Giants? Then I have nothing to say. I’m sorry I scared

everybody.”
