NEW SOUTH FERRY SUBWAY STATION OPENS

First you see it, now you don’t!

About 20 minutes after the new, state-of-the-art South Ferry station opened today at noon to a large, politician-filled ceremony, the MTA had to close it because of a municipal water main break at Canal Street.

“What can you say?” said Paul Waldman, who was admiring the artwork at on the new platform. “That’s New York City, that’s the MTA.”

Water Main Break Disrupts Service

Passengers were told to take the new, free transfer to the R and W lines.

The main broke near the Holland Tunnel on Varick Street, several city agencies closed the main and the MTA is trying to pump the water out.

Service below 14th Street on the 1, 2, 3 lines is still suspended because the water is above the tracks, said NYCT spokesman Charles Seaton.

Agency officials put red ribbons on the entrances to the new platform at about 1:30 p.m. Some people still asked to walk around and see the new artwork, which includes an old map of Manhattan and stainless steel fences.
