Valerie Harper says her TV goodbyes

Valerie Harper, who revealed last week that she has been diagnosed with incurable brain cancer, is making what will likely be her final TV appearances today on “The Doctors” (9 a.m. on Ch. 2) and the “Today” show (7 a.m., Ch. 4).

“When I heard incurable. . . incurable is a tough word,” Harper tells the “Today” show, according to an excerpt of the interview released last night.

“A lot of people were calling: ‘Can I come by the house?’ ‘Are you in a wheelchair? Because they hear it as this death sentence,” she says. “Which it may be. But I’m not dying until I do. I promise I won’t.”

Asked about why she went public with the news, Harper replied: “It feels awful damn good to be open about it, face it and see what you can do.

“If you die, you’re not a failure. You’re just somebody who had cancer. And that’s the outcome.”
