Cano may have met secretly with Tigers

Robinson Cano already has been shopped to the Mets and now the free agent second baseman may have also flown to Detroit to visit the Tigers.

Cano’s representatives had a clandestine meeting at a hotel in Manhattan Monday, when Jay Z and Brodie Van Wagenen met with members of the Mets front office.

On Friday came word that the second baseman or his reps may have been in Detroit to talk to the Tigers.

There were reports of Cano perhaps being seen at a small airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan, outside of Detroit. The potential visit was unconfirmed and even if it did take place, the Tigers — like the Mets — would seem to be an unlikely landing spot for Cano.

Though the Tigers have shown a willingness to dole out huge contracts and figure to have money to spend following last week’s trade of Prince Fielder to Texas, the fact that they received standout second baseman Ian Kinsler in return would leave Cano without a spot.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski seemed to shoot down the notion that the newly-acquired Kinsler could shift to another position to make room for Cano.

“We plan on having Ian Kinsler as our second baseman this year,” Dombrowski told Mlive.com in an email on Friday.

Cano’s side declined comment on the rumors Saturday.

“Roc Nation and CAA’s policy is not to comment on specifics of negotiations,” Roc Nation spokesman Ron Berkowitz said. “We don’t discuss details of our process including the who, what, when or where we meet with people or the status of negotiations.”

Throughout the offseason, people within the industry have waited for serious suitors to emerge and pursue Cano, the top and most expensive free agent on the market.

So far, that hasn’t happened.

The Mets, by their own admission, aren’t willing to break the bank for Cano, but still agreed to last week’s meeting, which was first reported by The Post.

With Kinsler now in Detroit, Texas is seen by some as a potential landing spot for the 31-year-old Cano, where he and Fielder would be a formidable presence in the middle of the lineup.

Others are not as convinced, believing that the Rangers will instead shift Jurickson Profar to second base, with Elvis Andrus at shortstop.

Those plans could change, as well, if the Rangers decide to pursue a trade for Tampa Bay lefty David Price. Profar likely would be involved in such a move and then there would be room for Cano in Arlington.
