British PM David Cameron may declare royal wedding a public holiday

British Prime Minister David Cameron suggested Thursday he may declare the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton a public holiday in the UK.

The couple, who announced their engagement Tuesday, have given the plan their backing, a royal spokesman said shortly after.

William and Middleton will marry in the spring or summer of 2011 and are expected to announce a date in the coming days. Cameron said he would support a public holiday even if the wedding takes place on a weekend.

A public holiday was declared for the last royal wedding between William’s father, Prince Charles, and Princess Diana, on July 29, 1981.

Middleton visited Westminster Abbey late Wednesday, feeding speculation that the ceremony will take place in the London church’s grand surroundings.
