Jeter’s agent: Report way off base

The agent for Derek Jeter said a published report yesterday stating the free agent shortstop was asking for a six-year, $150 million deal from the Yankees is untrue.

“The recently rumored terms of our contract proposal are simply inaccurate,” agent Casey Close wrote in an e-mail.

The Yankees and Jeter have been engaged in a standoff over what the 36-year-old shortstop deserves. The Yankees made an offer of three years, $45 million, but Jeter wants more years and money.

Neither Close nor Jeter has made it public how much more they want. The two sides traded verbal barbs this week with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman challenging Jeter to test the market.

No other teams are believed to have expressed interest in the Yankees legend.
