“I’ve only recently bought a place [in Montauk], so it’s official,” says Rufus Wainwright. “But we’ve been dating for a while.” The singer and his boyfriend, Jorn Weisbrodt, inhabit a “ ’60s surf shack” in the Hither Woods neighborhood and enjoy Montauk’s laid-back vibe. “The Montauk crowd is varied. It’s more working-class in terms of vacationers.” In his free time, the Montreal-born descendent of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle tends to his rose garden and swims in the ocean looking for sharks, in order to conquer his fear of them. Wainwright released a new album in the spring called “All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu,” and he’ll play Prospect Park on Tuesday. This is his Montauk.

1 Coffee Tauk,
83 South Elmwood Ave., Montauk

“I went there [recently], and I thought it was brilliant. They have delicious iced coffees and gelato.”

2 Hampton Gym,
395 County Road 39A, Southampton

“I work out every day at Hampton Gym. What’s great about it is that the East Hampton branch is for older, rich women. The Sag Harbor branch is for gay guys and the Southampton branch is for straight dudes. That’s the one me and my boyfriend like to go to. We go to the gym and get them all aroused with nowhere to go.”

3 Joni’s,
9 Edison Drive, Montauk

“I love it. It’s like a surf shack and sandwich shop where all the cute young people go. It really gets you in the mood for summer. It’s something from a modern-day ‘Grease’ film, only with more skin. Right now, I like the sandwich called Thai Me Up. That’s good.”

4 Shagwong Restaurant,
774 Main St., Montauk

“It’s been there since ‘69, and it’s where the Rolling Stones used to hang out. They have really great lobster. The atmosphere is superb. It’s filthy and smelly, and once again, sexy. It has some of that Montauk funk, which is why we’re all out here. We want to stay away from the white linens of the Hamptons.”

5 Provisions,
corner of Bay and Division streets, Sag Harbor

“It’s a health food store in Sag Harbor that has fantastic organic food and vegetarian burritos. I had a seitan [wheat gluten] Reuben that was actually pretty good.”

6 Clam Bar At Napeague,
2025 Montauk Highway, Amagansett

“I’ve become a vegetarian, and I’m adjusting. I admit, I have succumbed to in my vegetarian state occasionally, but don’t hate me. I’m trying to wean myself slowly off this place. It’s on Route 27, and there are two places: The Lobster Roll on the right, and the Clam Bar on the left. The Clam Bar is much better. You sit outside and they have the most insane clams and steamers and corn and chowder and all of that stuff. It’s really great and super expensive, which is a wake-up call.”

7 Duryea’s Lobster Deck & Seafood Market,
65 Tuthill Road, Montauk

“That’s a famous place, and a good place to go if you want lobster and fish sandwiches, which is a distant memory for this sentenced herbivore. I don’t think I can even go with friends. I have to watch from across the street with chains on my feet. Lobster is that good. It’s the enemy at this point, because I love it so much.

I have to wear my armor against their shells.”

8 Hampton Chutney Co.,
Amagansett Square, Amagansett

“Amagansett is like the Switzerland of the Hamptons. It’s neutral. I go to Hampton Chutney all the time. They have dosas, Indian sandwiches with all these incredible chutneys.”

9 Memory Bar & Motel,
692 Montauk Highway, Montauk

“That’s where the Rolling Stones lived and worked. It’s pretty low-rent and exciting in that way. If you want to get a divorce or something, stay there.”
