TORONTO — Steve Mills, who once hired Isiah Thomas to run the Knicks, got his hackles up when asked if Thomas still had a behind-the-scenes role with the club.
“He doesn’t have any role with the team,’’ Mills snapped. Mills said he “hopes’’ Thomas either is voted in as executive director of the Players Association or replaces Magic Johnson on the ESPN basketball crew.
Mills said he hasn’t spoken to Thomas since being hired two weeks ago, but received a congratulatory voicemail. Mills, when asked if his link to Thomas is unfortunate, said: “It is what it is. You asked me at the press conference if I had any regrets. When you look back at anything in your life, you could have done something better or different. I know what I’m capable of doing.’’
