BOSTON — Hal Steinbrenner, Hank Steinbrenner and Felix Lopez will be in New York for a couple of days the week of Oct. 21 to discuss the game plan for 2014 with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and the baseball staff.
After Hal Steinbrenner said last week no stone would be left unturned when it came to the minor league system, smoke signals went up that jobs could be on the line.
Nevertheless, Cashman downplayed the powwow.
“I meet with them all the time,’’ said Cashman, who has a year left on his contract.
Robinson Cano’s future likely will be discussed as well as what to do with Curtis Granderson, who can be a free agent. So, too, will Masahiro Tanaka, the best pitcher in Japan who has to go through the posting process before being eligible to sign with a major league club.
The Yankees also are interested in Cuban defector Jose Abreu, a first baseman they have been watching work out in the Dominican Republic.
Hal Steinbrenner had Cashman, minor league head Mark Newman and Damon Oppenheimer, the head of amateur scouting, in Tampa in September and was looking for reasons the minor league system didn’t deliver players to the big leagues this season. Newman and Oppenheimer have one more year remaining on their contracts.
