Baby born by the book – at Bronx library

He must have been overdue!

A worker helped a young mother give birth to a boy at a Bronx library branch after the freaked-out woman went into labor while walking by yesterday.

Wanda Luzon, a 28-year-old information assistant at the Clason Point branch, lay the pregnant woman on a blanket, spoke Spanish to comfort her and even cleaned up afterward — going well beyond her job requirements.

“I was trying to keep her awake, because she was going in and out of consciousness,” Luzon said.

“I was trying to make her feel as comfortable as possible, because I know it’s not easy,” she said.

Luzon, 28, was hosting an Easter Egg hunt for toddlers at 12:10 p.m. when the 24-year-old woman’s water broke near the library entrance.

Luzon ushered the woman to a small hallway near the entrance and locked it to give her privacy while the woman’s husband and a female friend called for help.

The mom gave birth within minutes, before paramedics arrived and rushed her to a hospital, Luzon said.

The young mom’s female friend and husband also helped deliver the baby, who is now in good condition at Jacobi Medical Center.

Despite the mom’s pain, she remained surprisingly calm through the ordeal, Luzon said.

Luzon said she first offered the woman a chair but she was in too much pain.

Luzon has worked for the New York Public Library for 11 years, has a 4-year-old daughter, and said she was happy to help.

“Thank God we were here,” she said.

A library spokeswoman said the branch now wants to give the baby a library card because he’s “clearly a fan.”
