New app will pay for parking

Don’t leave the smartphone home if you’re planning to park in The Bronx.

The city is planning to announce today that parking meters in one area of the borough will start accepting payments through a smartphone app.

People can put money on a pre-paid account that will be accessed via the application. The project will take place on and around a section of Arthur Avenue.

“It will be a pilot project,” said one source. “The mayor promised to do this in 2009 and now he’s doing it.”

Mayor Bloomberg announced more than three years ago that the city was looking to develop an electronic funds-transfer program so drivers could pay their tabs without incurring additional fees.

The Finance Department now accepts those payments for fines. Credit cards incur a 2.5 percent fee.
