INSIDE THE MATCHUPS

YANKEES: Pettitte, 40, was brilliant in his season debut, inducing three ground-ball double plays to get through eight innings in just 94 pitches. The veteran lefty was facing the Indians at Yankee Stadium last June 27 when he broke his left ankle on a batted ball. He’s 8-8 with a 4.17 ERA lifetime against Cleveland.

INDIANS: Carrasco, a 26-year-old from Venezuela, is making his first big league start in 20 months after missing 2012 following Tommy John surgery — and serving a six-game suspension left over from 2011. He had a 4.62 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 21 starts for the Indians that season. Carrasco has a career 5.99 ERA in Cleveland, and lefties hit .297 against him.

STAT SO?

YANKEES: Travis Hafner set the record yesterday for most RBIs by a player born in North Dakota (700), passing longtime Angel Darin Erstad.

INDIANS: Teammates Mark Reynolds (2008, 2009, 2010) and Drew Stubbs (2011) own four of the five all-time 200-strikeout seasons (Adam Dunn has the other).
