After sewage scare, Ironman swim is a go

No s#!t — the swim portion of tomorrow’s NYC Ironman competition is on.

Organizers got the word this afternoon from the city Department of Environmental Protection that a multi-million gallon sewage leak in Westchester County won’t affect the 2.4-mile swim course on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River.

“We passed. We’re pretty excited,” said John Korff, the event’s chief organizer.

Tomorrow’s event begins in Palisades Interstate Park with a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Some 2,500 professional and amateur triathletes have registered for the race, which ends in Riverside Park in Manhattan.

Ironman organizers took water samples yesterday from three points along the swimming route, and all tested clean, Korff said.

A sewer main break in Tarrytown, on the opposite side of the Hudson about 15 miles north of the race site, had threatened to cancel the swim.

Westchester County work crews worked around the clock to fix the sewer main, county officials said in a statement. The county expects to lift its own warnings against boating and swimming downstream of Tarrytown area by 11 p.m. today.
