A grizzled ex-con who shot his parole officer told investigators the it was “fate” that he shoot the man – and noted the attempted murder case against him is a slam dunk, according to a video played at his Brooklyn trial today.
Robert “Poison” Morales, 52, blasted his parole officer Samuel Salters in the shoulder during a visit to the officer’s Downtown Brooklyn office in 2010.
“It’s a shut deal for you. You don’t even have to do any homework.
It’s a done deal,” Morales calmly told investigators the night he was arrested. “I found that gun for a reason. It was like God said, ‘Here, step to the plate, see what we’re going to do,’”
The video was recorded the night of the shooting before detectives and an assistant district attorney at the 84th Precinct in Downtown Brooklyn.
When asked on the video what he aimed for, Morales said, “His head.
Unfortunately I missed. If the man doesn’t die he should be investigated.”
Morales was angry with Salters because he said the veteran parole officer treated him like a child.
“Demeaning isn’t even the word for it. They got to put a new word in the dictionary for this guy,” Morales said in the video. “Before him I never had a problem with anybody in the parole office.”
Morales also claimed he found the gun on his way to meet Salters after he saw a black man drop it in a garbage can.
“It was fate. The guy was riding my back and the opportunity presented itself and I took it,” Morales said.
The ex-con was on parole for setting a fire over a $2 debt that killed an 8-year-old boy. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in 1979 and was released in 2002.
