Silver-screen vampire Robert Pattinson stepped out of the shadows and into the Manhattan spotlight last night for the first time since movie-star gal pal Kristen Stewart was caught cheating on him.

The 26-year-old “Twilight” hunk taped an appearance for Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” in Midtown, and then walked the red carpet at the Museum of Modern Art for the premiere of his latest film, “Cosmopolis.”

At Comedy Central, host Jon Stewart offered Pattinson ice cream and said, “So, just a couple of gals talkin’ . . . Are you alright?

Pattinson replied awkwardly, suggesting that he could have handled the intense scrutiny of his bust-up with Stewart better if he’d had professional help.

“My biggest problem is that I don’t have a publicist,’’ he said.

“I’m going to have to hire a publicist.’’

Later, at MoMA, the sore subject of Stewart’s cheating wasn’t addressed by the handful of local TV reporters there.

Wearing a dark-blue suit with perfectly combed hair and surrounded by hundreds of screaming girls, the painfully shy Pattinson simply talked about his new movie.

After less than five minutes, he was whisked inside a museum theater without further comment.

Pattinson — who did not speak the name of his ex last night — is next slated to appear on “Good Morning America” tomorrow and an MTV special Thursday.

Meanwhile, Stewart is extremely on edge over his planned public appearances.

“Kristen is very, very nervous,” a source told Radar Online.

“She’s confident that Robert, who has always been such a private person about his personal life, will keep quiet over the cheating scandal,’’ the source said.

But “while she has a sense of humor, this isn’t something she wants joked about. Kristen is hurting and doesn’t want her heartbreak poked fun at on TV.”

Scores of Pattinson’s swooning fans said that they didn’t care that he hasn’t addressed the scandal, and that they would still do anything to meet him.

Some had even been camped out at MoMA since Saturday to get the chance.

“We don’t judge her,” Kathryn Bunting, 23, said of Stewart. “Their personal life is their personal life.”

Last month, Pattinson moved out of the Los Angeles home he shared with his on-and-off-screen squeeze after explosive revelations she had a fling with her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, Rupert Sanders, 41.
