Pennington says Jets QB tandem can work

CORTLAND — When Chad Pennington first spoke to Mark Sanchez after the Tim Tebow trade this spring, Pennington found at least one bright spot from Sanchez’s perspective.

“Well, I told him, ‘Guess what? Look on the bright side. You don’t have to do as many interviews,’ ” Pennington said with a smile when talking to reporters after Tuesday’s practice.

Ever since the Jets acquired Tebow to be Sanchez’s backup and use him in the Wildcat, people have been waiting to see if the dynamic of having both quarterbacks on the roster will wind up blowing up in the team’s face.

But Pennington said he thinks if the two of them can make it work, it could end up being a terrific story.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s Tim Tebow or anybody,” Pennington, the former Jets quarterback, said. “The organization has to bring in a quarterback as a backup that can help you win. The volatility of the position is amazing, and there’s so many injuries, you have to have two quarterbacks as an organization to win.”

Sione Po’uha didn’t practice again, making it two weeks since the nose tackle had to leave practice after suffering a cut over his left eye that required stitches. The cut has since healed, but Po’uha has also been hampered by a back injury, and hasn’t been on the practice field several times in recent days.

Coach Rex Ryan said one of those days Po’uha went to New York for treatment, and was one of several players to return to the city. The Jets confirmed Tuesday night that Po’uha had his back examined.

“I think Sione’s going to be fine,” Ryan said. “I’m not a doctor or anything, but that’s my understanding that he’s going to be fine.”

Rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill suffered an injury to his right ring finger during team drills when he was matched up against Darrelle Revis.

“Going against Revis, just trying to grab and this finger, I don’t know if it’s dislocated or whatever, but it’s fine,” Hill said after practice.

The second-round pick in this year’s draft didn’t think the injury would impact him moving forward.

“I’m just out here trying to get better,” Hill said. “If I can just get it to bend, they’re probably going to bend it this weekend, it shouldn’t be a problem. Just see what the training staff says right now.”

X-rays were negative on Hill’s finger, according to the Jets.
