Fordham nabs UConn transfer

The Rams’ quarterback battle became a little bit bigger with the announcement that former UConn QB Michael Nebrich will transfer to Fordham.

Nebrich, a sophomore who played under Fordham head coach Joe Moorhead while he was quarterbacks coach for the Huskies, will join sophomore Peter Maetzold and senior Ryan Higgins as the three players vying for the starting quarterback position.

“[Michael] adds another number to the quarterback battle,” Moorhead told The Post. “Ryan and Peter have been competing and have been even thus far and we planned on carrying the competition into fall camp. Michael adds another solid player with tremendous experience with the spread offense.”

Nebrich was granted his release from the team last Thursday and can play immediately without having to sit out a year because Fordham plays in the Patriot League (FCS).

The Virginia native played in five games in his freshman season, including a 35-3 Huskies win over Fordham where Nebrich completed three passes for 60 yards and an interception. Higgins appeared in eight games for the Rams and threw for 1,788 yards and seven touchdowns while Maetzold appeared in seven contests and passed for 668 yards and four touchdowns.

Moorhead said he is not in a rush to name a starter even with the Rams’ first game just 16 days away.

“As soon as we’re ready, we’ll name a starter,” Moorhead said. “Michael just got here, he’s got two practices under his belt so we’re trying to expedite the learning process and get him some reps. We don’t play for 16 days so we can let the guys compete and see who does best.”
