Giants players unhappy with size of beds at training camp

ALBANY — Defensive tackle Marvin Austin has a back issue that sent him into Manhattan to get checked out. Left tackle Will Beatty came into camp with an achy back and said sleeping on the mattresses in the dorms at the University at Albany didn’t help at all.

Linval Joseph, a 6-foot-4, 323-pound defensive tackle, said he believes he knows what the problem is.

“I mean, everybody has been complaining about their back because the beds in the dorm are fairly hard,’’ Joseph said Tuesday. “My back is hurting, too. I think it is just the bed.’’

Tight end Martellus Bennett, at 6-foot-6, could not cram his way into the beds at the school.

“We’re big humans,’’ he said. “Every bed is small. You can’t put a damn dinosaur in a twin-sized bed.’’

All this talk about bad beds sure sounds like a knock at the accommodations in the dorms but, in this case, it’s a bunch of hot air. The Giants actually supply the beds for their players during the 20-day stay in training camp. There have been complaints about the beds, according to a Giants spokesman, and when there were issues in the past a new bed was provided by the team.

Asked about his bed in camp, coach Tom Coughlin said: “I don’t know. My rear end is bothering me, but it’s not from that.’’

Of course, Coughlin, when he slept, didn’t do so in the dorms; he stayed in a nearby hotel.

DE Justin Trattou, sidelined early in camp with what at first was diagnosed as an ankle injury, is experiencing issues with his heel and is not expected back on the field for several weeks. With Trattou out, the fourth defensive end spot looks like it belongs to Adrian Tracy.

Co-owner John Mara told The Post: “It could be a factor to consider, sure’’ in a possible return for training camp next summer that school president George Philipe said he will look into supplying the Giants with an indoor facility.

Coughlin, asked if he was happy about the facilities at the school, said: “Except for when it rains.’’

“The thing that I want to say is I think the fans here have been fabulous,’’ Coughlin said. “Obviously we’re coming off a Super Bowl win, so you’d be inclined to think that might be the case, but to have 5,000 people at a Sunday afternoon practice here. I just think they’ve been great.’’

Camp attendance was 37,684, an average of 2,692 per day.

WR Ramses Barden sat out of practice because of soreness in his ankle and foot.

WR Jerrel Jernigan, coming off a rough preseason opener, made several impressive catches. The best was when he got between Prince Amukamara and Antrel Rolle and hauled in Eli Manning’s deep pass on the left sideline.
