MLB: King Felix finally loses

Mark Trumbo hit a two-run single in the eighth that chased Felix Hernandez and gave the Angels their fifth straight victory, 5-2 over the Mariners in Seattle. Hernandez (13-6) entered the game 9-0 with a 1.40 ERA over his previous 14 starts.

In Toronto, Matt Joyce homered and had three RBIs, and the Rays beat the Blue Jays 5-4. Tampa Bay trails the Yankees by 4 1/2 games in the AL East. The game ended when Tampa’s B.J. Upton threw out the potential tying run at the plate.

In Washington, David Freese homered, drove in three runs and had a go-ahead single in the ninth as the Cardinals ended a four-game skid with a 10-9 win over the Nationals.

In Atlanta, Cliff Lee threw seven scoreless innings, leading the Phillies past the Braves 5-1.

In Chicago, Tim Lincecum pitched four-hit ball into the seventh and Xavier Nady had a three-run double as the Giants beat the Cubs 5-2.

In Pittsburgh, Corey Hart homered to lead off the ninth and lift the Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Pirates who lost for the ninth time in their last 12 games.

In Los Angeles, former Red Sox Josh Beckett pitched 6 2/3 strong innings for his first victory since being traded to the Dodgers and Andre Ethier hit a tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning to help the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 2-1, snapping Los Angeles’ eight-game skid against their NL West rival.

NFL: No deal with referees

The NFL and its on-field officials’ union failed to reach an agreement when they met yesterday morning in Manhattan, and the league said it’s proceeding with replacement officials for the league’s first week of regular-season games.

Michael Arnold, lead negotiator for the NFL Referees Association, said the union remains “willing to negotiate with the NFL in order to reach a fair agreement.” But Arnold said “no additional meetings are scheduled at this time.”

NCAA: Another fan fatality

A 20-year-old man from Tennessee who plunged about 35 feet from the upper level of the Georgia Dome and struck another fan during the Tennessee-North Carolina State game has died, authorities said. The man fell on another fan seated in the mezzanine area during the game Friday night.

The fall occurred a day after a 25-year-old fan tumbled about 60 feet from a fifth-floor escalator at Reliant Stadium in Houston during Thursday night’s Texans-Vikings game.

SOCCER: Sundhage leaving

The U.S. women’s soccer team coach Pia Sundhage is stepping down, returning to her native Sweden after leading the Americans to back-to-back Olympic gold medals and their first World Cup final in 12 years.

Sundhage told her players before yesterday’s 8-0 exhibition victory over Costa Rica in Rochester, N.Y.

Nets coach Avery Johnson reportedly will meet with free-agent center Andray Blatche this weekend in Houston.

Kara Braxton had 14 points, including eight in a decisive 11-0 run in the second quarter, to help the Liberty (10-16) snap a three-game losing streak. Carson shot 8 for 13 from the field and also had six assists.

In Switzerland, Richie Ramsay of Scotland shot a 7-under 64 for a one-stroke lead after the third round at the rainy European Masters.

In Hampton, Ga., Ricky Stenhouse Jr. used a late push from runner-up Brad Keselowski to pass Kevin Harvick and win the Nationwide race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
