A TV that’s 4x better

HDTV not good enough for you?

Got an extra $15,000 or so lying around?

The latest tech innovation in TV right now is called 4K TV — named for the claim that it’s picture is four times more detailed than current high def.

Sony announced over the weekend it will be selling the first set capable of 4K later this year.

But it’s not for studio-apartment dwellers. The set measures 84 inches diagonally — or about 7 feet wide by 3 1/2 feet tall.

No price was mentioned, but experts believe it will cost at least $15,000, and likely more.

Turns out the biggest drawback is neither its size or price tag.

It’s that no TV shows or DVDs have been produced in such ultra-high definition to take advantage of the new technical advance.

In an interview published over the weekend, HBO’s chief technology officer, Robert Zitter, said that right now he and other TV people “look at 4K somewhat skeptically.”

An upgrade to 4K would require the TV show producers to make a huge investment in new equipment, he said.

And what’s more, “You can’t see the difference on a screen that is smaller than 60 inches,” said Zitter.
