A new DA for Albany

Troubled by charges that a state lawmaker sexually harassed young women and that Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Comptroller Tom DiNapoli hushed up a payment meant to settle ensuing complaints?

Never fear: DA Whitewash is on the case.

That is, Albany County DA David Soares.

And actually, there’s huge cause to fret.

Soares, recall, is the guy whose “probe” of then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s Dirty Tricks campaign (exposed by The Post) deemed the gov spick-and-span clean. Notwithstanding allegations by then-Attorney General Andrew Cuomo — and almost everyone else. (The DA later reversed course, but only after Spitzer quit amid his sex scandal.)

Now the Associated Press reports that Soares is joining the probe into the sexual-harassment allegations against Assemblyman Vito Lopez.

Soares does have relevant experience here: After all, Lopez is charged with making sexual overtures to women he worked with — just as Soares did.

Yes, the 42-year-old DA was caught dating a 26-year-old subordinate last year.

Unlike with other DAs, all New Yorkers pay when Albany’s prosecutor is himself a slime. That’s because his office gets jurisdiction over most cases of corruption by state pols — Spitzer, Lopez, Silver . . .

If he can’t be trusted — well, it will be that much more difficult to rid New York government of corruption.

Soares faces a primary challenge Tuesday from lawyer and former Marine Lee Kindlon. The Post unhesitatingly urges Albany County voters to back Kindlon.
