Speeding car sparks fire, power outage in Bronx

A car racing down a Bronx street hit a speed bump and flew into a fence in front of a home today — causing two electric poles to catch fire, authorities and witnesses said.

The gray Mitsubishi Lancer became airborne around 5:35 p.m. on East 225th Street in Williamsbridge and hit the barrier in front of the house.

“I was playing Wii and I heard the car speeding,” said 11-year-old Raynaldo Mills.

“I looked through my window and it came up on the curb,” Raynaldo said.

The car — which had three men inside — then struck two electric poles, which caught fire and knocked power out in the house.

“The whole building was shaking. There were three guys in the cars and they all ran,” Raynaldo said.

“The driver had a cast on his hands. He ran back to the car to get his hat.”

One person was rushed to Jacobi Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the FDNY said.

It was not immediately clear if the injured person was a passenger or pedestrian.
