‘Maritime’ makeover

Here’s the first glimpse of what the old Battery Maritime Building downtown will look like one day.

The 103-year-old Beaux Arts building at 10 South St. served as one of the city’s original ferry terminals, offering trips to Staten Island, Brooklyn and Governors Island.

In 1909, when it was completed, the 55,000-square-foot second-floor waiting room was one of the city’s grandest entertaining spaces.

But since 1938, when the Brooklyn ferry service was terminated, the landmark building at the southern tip of Manhattan has fallen into disrepair, with chipping paint and no purpose. Most recently, it served as storage area for yellowed city government files.

In 2006, the city completed a $60 million exterior renovation to the building. In July, the Dermot Co. closed on a 99-year lease with the city, with plans to transform the four-story building into a 10,000-square-foot public food market by spring 2015.

Plans include building a 70-room boutique hotel, a rooftop restaurant and a live performance space.
