‘Poplar’ revolt vs. Wenner

Jann Wenner can’t always get what he wants.

The Rolling Stone magazine co-founder-turned-upstate-land-baron got an earful this week at a Dutchess County hearing on his bid to cut down 17 poplar and other trees on the landmark Hudson Riverfront property he owns.

Wenner, 66, has claimed the tree loss at his $8 million estate in Tivoli would be “incidental,” but some neighbors and local planning members are skeptical.

The last time Wenner got permission to ax trees, they claim, he took out enough for a forest — knocking down about 300 rather than the 53 that were approved.

Local officials are concerned the tree removal will cause erosion and other environmental problems, says the Daily Freeman newspaper.

Wenner has also been told to submit a plan for replacing the trees he wants to chop down.

“It’s a real small issue and not worth the drama,” the surly Wenner said at the meeting.

Wenner, who shares his sprawling, 88-acre estate with longtime love Matt Nye and their three young kids, sparked an uproar in 2009 with a bid to put in a helipad. The chopper-landing area was eventually shot down.
