Widow calls elderly man killed in UES crash ‘a hero’

An elderly Upper East Side man who was killed in a crash involving a member of the Pakistani Mission to the UN died a hero, his heartbroken widow said today.

“He sacrificed his for life for me. He really gave me a good shove. It was in a second, he saved my life,” sobbed Denise baum, 60, who watched in horrow as a speeding car grazed her but slammed into her beloved hubby, Rubin “Ruby” Baum.

The 80-year-old Rubin Baum, who earned two Purple Hearts as a medic during the Korean War, was struck by a black Mazda as he and his wife were hailing a cab at East 59th Street and Park Avenue to head to their Upper East Side apartment.

The Mazda was heading east on East 59th when it collided with a minivan carrying a Pakistani diplomat heading north on Park about 10:30 p.m. yesterday.

The impact caused the Mazda to careen out of control and strike the Baums as they stood on a corner.

Police did not expect to file charges in the accident.

After the accident, “[Denise Baum] jumped right up and saw her husband and said, ‘My husband! My husband! Somebody call my son!’ ” said witness Terry Hill, who works nearby.

“The son showed up, and he was crying,” Hill said.
