Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli and Aretha Franklin paid musical tribute to Marvin Hamlisch in New York last night, fondly remembering the sweetness and the sorrow of his wonderful career.

Hamlisch was 68 when he died in Los Angeles Aug. 6, robbing the world of one its greatest movie and stage composers.

Close friends of the legendary songwriter smiled and cried throughout the star-studded memorial service, held at Hamlisch’s alma mater, The Juilliard School.

Minnelli sang “If You Really Knew Me,” Franklin soulfully delivered “Nobody Does It Better” and Streisand brought the house down with Hamlisch’s signature piece, “The Way We Were.”

Actress Susan Lucci said she wouldn’t have missed last night’s memorial for the world “because Marvin was a personal friend, as well as a national treasure, and a genius, and a warm and generous, funny, wonderful man.”

Other luminaries, such as Regis Philbin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Sawyer and Hollywood power couple Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, also attended.
