Autumn colors fire up the red carpet

The ladies of Hollywood were in an East Coast state of mind on the Emmys red carpet last night, skipping through the full spectrum of fall foliage hues.

Leading the charge in back-to-school shades was the most unlikely color in the pretty pantheon — rust — as adopted by “2 Broke Girls” Kat Dennings in J. Mendel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Veep” in Vera Wang. Running a close second was its rosier cousin burgundy, another fall fashion pack favorite, embraced beautifully by Tina Fey, bowing out gracefully with her final season of “30 Rock” in a regal scooped-out strapless Vivienne Westwood.

OPINION: KNOCKING ‘EM DEAD

Not to be overshadowed by the dark glamour, the brighter end of the spectrum was well represented by oranges, greens and yellows. Ginnifer Goodwin looked girlishly good in a peachy Monique Lhuillier while Padma Lakshmi knocked ’em dead in a bombshell orange mermaid dress by the same designer. Leslie Mann played a sweet Audrey Hepburn look in an orange creamsicle Naeem Kham two-piece gown. But several stunners went a riskier acid-toned way in chartreuse including Emmy winners Julie Bowen in Monique Lhuillier and Julianne Moore in Dior Haute Couture. It was easy being green for just as many others including Allison Williams in evergreen Oscar de la Renta and Julianna Margulies going full flora in a printed Giambattista Valli Couture gown.

With all those strapless numbers, there was nary a necklace in sight. Instead, earrings ruled the night, from the smallest drops to the biggest chandeliers. In a funny counterpoint to all the label dropping, leave it to the comedians, like Melissa McCarthy and Amy Poehler, to wear their kids’ adjustable toy box rings to match their designer duds. Rock on, ladies.
