Mayor Mike’s bike menace

The Issue: Whether the city needs to step up enforcement of biking regulations to limit injuries.

Here’s a way to make bicycle-delivery guys follow the rules: Demand that all delivery bicycles have a sign showing which restaurant they work for (“Two-Wheeled Terror,” Editorial, Sept. 19).

One could call the number on the sign and verify the cyclist.

If they have no sign, stop and ticket them. If they break the law by running a stop sign or red light, fine the restaurant.

This is such a simple way to get them to follow the rules that I’m not sure why it isn’t already being done.

Now that more and more cyclists are filling the streets, ignoring the rules and endangering pedestrians, the mayor is trying to placate their prospective victims with another ineffectual, phony crackdown.

Bike lanes make our streets more perilous for pedestrians and have further narrowed our already congested grid. They should be removed immediately at the mayor’s expense.

If cyclists are going to share the road, they must abide by the same rules as every other vehicle. If they can’t, then they don’t belong there.

What do you call a cyclist who bikes on busy highways or crowded city streets? A “psycholist.”
