Jets don’t have diagnosis yet for Santonio’s injured left foot

The Jets remain unsure just how severe the foot injury to top wide receiver Santonio Holmes is.

Holmes underwent an MRI exam yesterday, but the Jets did not announce the results. They sent the test results to Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot specialist in Charlotte, N.C., according to a source, for a second opinion.

X-rays showed no broken bones in Holmes’ left foot. The concern is whether there is ligament damage. Coach Rex Ryan would not say whether they are specifically concerned it could be a lisfranc injury, which could mean Holmes would be lost for the season.

“If it’s muscle, it could heal much quicker,” Ryan said. “If it’s something else, ligaments or whatever, then it would take much longer.”

Holmes injured his foot on the first play of the fourth quarter in Sunday’s 34-0 loss to the 49ers. Even in the best case scenario for the Jets, Holmes is unlikely to play Monday against the Texans. When Ryan referred to how long the team might be without Holmes, he talked about weeks, not days.

The Jets are not considering bringing back Plaxico Burress, according to a source.

* The Jets signed troubled CB Aaron Berry to help fill the void left by Darrelle Revis, who will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL.

Berry, who has played 12 games for the Lions over the last two seasons, was arrested twice this summer, leading to the Lions cutting him. He served a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, a suspension that ended last week. The Jets met with Berry on Friday.

“Everybody has made mistakes in their lives,” Ryan said. “We feel that Aaron has a chance to be successful on and off the field here. If we didn’t believe that, then we wouldn’t bring him here.”

Berry, 24, was on track to be a starter for the Lions this year before he got into trouble. He was arrested in June under suspicion of DUI and announced he would enter the league’s substance-abuse program. In July he was accused of pointing a gun at three people in a Harrisburg, Pa., parking lot. He was arrested on three charges of simple assault.

* The Jets waived/injured TE Dedrick Epps to make room for Berry. Epps caught Tim Tebow’s lone pass Sunday and then injured his knee and fumbled the ball. … Ryan said on ESPN Radio that his team had 17 missed tackles on Sunday. … Ryan said Joe McKnight will be moved back to running back full-time with the addition of Berry. The Jets used McKnight at cornerback for two plays Sunday.
