SOCCER: Johnson gives U.S. win in Cup qualifier

Eddie Johnson, in his first game back with the U.S. national team, scored twice last night, including the winning goal in second-half injury time, lifting the United States to the verge of advancing in World Cup qualifying with a 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda in St.John’s, Antigua.

If the Americans beat Guatemala on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan., they will move into the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

NFL: Bounty players appeal says Goodell not impartial

All four players punished in the NFL’s bounty investigation have filed appeals with the league. People familiar with the situation said the players have asked commissioner Roger Goodell to remove himself as arbitrator because they do not believe he can be impartial. One of the people also said New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma expects to play at Tampa Bay on Oct. 21 while his appeal is pending.

Robert Griffin III (concussion) took part in the Redskins’ full practice for the first time this week and appears set to play tomorrow against the Vikings.

Cornerback Joe Haden will return to the Browns’ starting lineup tomorrow after a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.

MLB: K-Rod arrested after domestic dispute

Ex-Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, now with the Brewers, was arrested in September for domestic violence, according to CBSSports.com. The news was first reported by CBS 58 in Milwaukee.

The arrest happened at Rodriguez’s home on Sept. 17 and the incident involved his girlfriend. No charges have been filed, but the Waukesha County District Attorney is still reviewing the case.

Rodriguez was arrested in 2010 for allegedly assaulting the father of his girlfriend after a Mets loss.

ETC.: Lance’s Tour de France titles in flux

The Tour de France will have no official winner for the seven races from 1999-2005 if Lance Armstrong is stripped of his victories by the International Cycling Union.

In an interview with the Associated Press yesterday, Tour director Christian Prudhomme called the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s report on Armstrong “damning.”

In Belek, Turkey, Justin Rose beat European Ryder Cup teammate Lee Westwood by a stroke to win the eight-player World Golf Final and earn a career-best $1.5 million.

In Conover, N.C., Dan Forsman overcame back problems to shoot a 7-under 65 and take a one-stroke lead over Fred Funk, David Frost and Larry Mize in the Champions Tour’s Greater Hickory Classic.

In Mount Pleasant, Mich., Keenan Reynolds threw three touchdown passes to lead Navy to its second straight victory, 31-13 over Central Michigan.
