Jets officially put Revis on IR

Darrelle Revis belatedly went on injured reserve Friday, nearly three weeks after the Jets’ star cornerback tore the ACL in his left knee.

Coach Rex Ryan, who had kept Revis off IR since the Sept. 23 injury in Miami because Ryan wanted him available for a possible Super Bowl appearance, said Revis’ surgery will be Thursday.

Revis officially was put on the shelf for the rest of the season last night, and Ryan said he was not designated for possible return under a new NFL rule implemented this season. The Jets added safety Antonio Allen from the practice squad to take Revis’ roster spot.

Ryan abandoned his dubious Revis Super Bowl plan because the Jets need the roster spot this week with safety Eric Smith unlikely to play in tomorrow’s home matchup with the Colts due to a knee injury.

“I was kind of holding out hope, but the more information we got, the more you realized that wouldn’t be good for Darrelle,” Ryan said. “There’s no way he’s going to come back and really be able to play at any time during the season.”

* The Jets expect tight end Dustin Keller , who missed four games with a hamstring problem, and wide receiver Stephen Hill to play Sunday, but they will be short-handed at other places.

As much as Smith’s injury depleting the safety spot, Ryan said the Jets expect defensive tackles Sione Pouha (back) and Kenrick Ellis (knee), wideout Clyde Gates (shoulder) and fullback John Conner (hamstring) to sit out against Indianapolis after being listed as doubtful. Center Nick Mangold, on the other hand, is officially questionable but will play.

* Ryan said he “didn’t remember” telling Drew Stanton during the free-agency recruiting process last spring that he would get the chance to replace Mark Sanchez if Sanchez struggled.

Stanton, who was signed by the Jets and then released a week later when they acquired Tim Tebow, is now with the Colts and made that claim to the Indianapolis Star yesterday.

“It wasn’t like we said, ‘Now that we’ve got you under contract, you’re going to be here regardless,’ ” Ryan said of Stanton. “It wasn’t our intent to mess him over when we signed him. It just so happened that this [Tebow] opportunity came up, and that’s why we made the move.”

* Santonio Holmes (Lisfranc injury) and linebacker Josh Mauga (knee) had surgery this week, and Ryan said the team expects both players to be recovered in time to be available for the start of the offseason program.

A group that included Ryan, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, secondary coach Dennis Thurman and linebacker Bart Scott all posed in “Chuckstrong” T-shirts for a picture they sent to Colts coach Chuck Pagano, their longtime friend who is battling cancer.
