MLB: Bosox to interview Wallach

The Red Sox will interview Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach today for their vacant managerial job. Boston also is interested in John Farrell, the current Blue Jays manager and former Red Sox pitching coach. Other names mentioned to succeed the fired Bobby Valentine are Padres catcher Brad Ausmus and Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo.

Champ Summers, who played for six major league teams and spent time as hitting coach for the Yankees, died yesterday. He was 66.

GOLF: O’Hern’s 62 leads in California

Australia’s Nick O’Hern shot a 9-under 62 to take a three-stroke lead over Nicolas Colsaerts, Jhonattan Vegas and Derek Ernst in the Frys.com Open in San Martin, Calif.

U.S. Women’s Open champ Na Yeon Choi, the defending champ, shot a 6-under 65 in the LPGA Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur for a share of the lead with Hall of Famer Karrie Webb.

Roger Federer guaranteed himself the No. 1 ranking for the 300th week of his career, beating Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the third round of the Shanghai Masters. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also reached the quarters.

Tamika Catchings scored 22 points to lead the Indiana Fever into the WNBA Finals with an 87-71 win over the Connecticut Sun. Indiana plays Sunday at Minnesota in Game 1.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a concussion and will sit out the next two Sprint Cup races at Charlotte and Kansas. He sustained the concussion in the 25-car pileup on the last lap of Sunday’s race at Talladega.
