Giants’ JPP to Redskins’ RG3: ‘Don’t bring it to my side’

Redskins rookie quarterback sensation Robert Griffin III already has shown the NFL world speed Usain Bolt might admire. And though the Giants fully expect to see it Sunday, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul Wednesday put RG3 on notice.

“Don’t bring it to my side. Go the other way,” Pierre-Paul warned.

And as fast as Griffin is — Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he was “probably the fastest guy on the field” last week when he busted a stunning 76-yard run against Minnesota — Big Blue’s defense has quickness of its own.

“Trust me, we chase quarterbacks all the time. We turn and run to the guy no matter what,” Pierre-Paul said. “He may … zoom past us, but trust me, we’re right behind him. You’ve got to respect that. It’s not all about the speed. We’ve got all 11 guys who can run to the ball. You’d be surprised, very surprised.

“It’s going to be a very good matchup,’’ Pierre-Paul said. “Not on my side though, or on the other side. Not on my side.’’

The Giants used some of their fastest players in practice to simulate the No. 2 overall pick, who already has six rushing touchdowns. Pierre-Paul, though, said he has his own special preparation.

“You get on a treadmill, you hit 5.0 and you keep running as fast as you can,” Pierre-Paul said. “They got a great quarterback and a great offensive line, but we also got a great D line and a great defense.”

The Giants emphasized, however, that Griffin in more than just a pair of jet-propelled legs. Passing also sets him apart. Griffin has the NFL’s third-highest passer rating — behind just Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Denver’s Peyton Manning.

“Accurate guy with a huge arm,” Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. “He’s a multi-weapon guy. He can do whatever he wants to do with the ball.”

Oh, don’t forget the leadership skills.

“He just goes about his business,” Washington coach Mike Shanahan said. “He doesn’t make very many mistakes. He just doesn’t handle himself like a rookie.”

Breaking news: RG3 cures the common cold. Film at 11.

“You do it one step at a time,” Griffin said of his fast-tracked NFL maturation. “I tried to make sure I came in and showed them first the kind of player I am, the kind of person I am. With my work ethic and how hard I work, I showed them that. … [After the preseason], they look at me as their leader.”

The Redskins employ a host looks. Pierre-Paul called it “a college offense. … You’ve got to respect it because you don’t where the ball will be. It might be a dive, an option, a quick toss or he might keep it. So you’ve got to respect him and be disciplined.”

But the respect needs to go both ways. And the Giants already have gotten a couple previews of RG3 by facing the ultra-mobile Michael Vick and Cam Newton.

“Containment is always a big word with the quarterbacks we play,” defensive end Justin Tuck said. “RG3 is probably the most mobile. We’ve never played him before [and] I haven’t seen him get caught. Last week, he definitely looked like that 4.3 time was legit.”

So Pierre-Paul and friends anticipate at least flashes of that speed at MetLife Stadium. He just does not want any part of it on his side and has said so.
