Construction worker trapped in hole after suffering apparent stroke

A construction worker suffered an apparent stroke this morning in Manhattan and wound up trapped in a hole, officials said.

The Skanska crew was laying the foundation for the new emergency room at NYU Medical Center on 1st Avenue and East 33rd Street when the worker fell ill at 9:29 a.m., one worker said.

“The worker felt ill all of a sudden and he couldn’t get out of the hole on his own,” said a safety officer for Skanska.

It took about 30 minutes for emergency workers to remove the man from the hole, witnesses said.

The Skanska concrete worker was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, said a spokesman for the FDNY.
