Debate moderator Candy Crowley draws fire for stepping in to contradict Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON — Conservatives pounced on CNN anchor Candy Crowley yesterday for correcting Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and giving President Obama more time during Tuesday’s presidential debate.

“I think he got aided and abetted by a horrible moderator who did a terrible job, who had no business trying to fact-check on the fly, especially when she was dead wrong,” former Gov. John Sununu (R-NH) said.

Obama got 3.14 minutes more speaking time, about 9 percent of the debate. Crowley defended Obama when Romney said the administration didn’t call last month’s raid on the US consulate in Benghazi a terrorist attack for the first two weeks.

Crowley pointed out that Obama referred to the incident as “acts of terror” in a Rose Garden speech the following day. Republicans have been blasting the administration for calling the Benghazi raid part of a spontaneous protest.

“He was in the Rose Garden talking about Benghazi so I didn’t think it was a huge leap,” Crowley said yesterday on “The View.”

At the end of the night, people should be talking about what the candidates said and not the moderator, said Charles Robinson, who regularly hosts politicians on his Maryland public TV show.
