The George Washington Bridge turns 81

FORT LEE, NJ — Commuters might want to give a nod to the George Washington Bridge.

The world’s most heavily traveled vehicular crossing opened 81 years ago Thursday.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 1931 named the bridge after the nation’s first president, who crossed the Hudson River between Washington Heights in upper Manhattan and Fort Lee as he fled the British during the Revolutionary War.

The agency says more than 300,000 vehicles cross the world’s only 14-lane suspension bridge daily.

The Port Authority plans to replace all 592 suspender-rope cables, which have been in place since the George Washington Bridge opened.
