Florida man struck, killed by city garbage truck

A garbage truck fatally struck a man on the Upper East Side today, authorities said.

Andrew Schoonover, 31, was crossing East 84th Street at 1:20 a.m. when he allegedly tripped over a piece of trash and fell into the path of an oncoming Department of Sanitation garbage truck, police sources said.

The garbage truck was heading southbound on 2nd Avenue and was slowing to pick up trash at the time of the accident, police said.

Schoonover, of Neptune Beach, Fla., was rushed to New York Hospital where he died, police said.

The driver of the sanitation truck remained on scene and police do not suspect any criminality, cops said.
