Bloomberg backs gay marriage in three states with $500K in donations

Mayor Bloomberg is coughing up another $500,000 to promote same sex marriage.

The mayor announced matching grants today in three states where marriage equality is on the ballot — $250,000 for Washington and $125,000 each to Maine and Minnesota.

Advocates in each state would have to raise equal sumss to receive the mayor’s money.

Bloomberg previously ponied up $250,000 to support a gay marriage referendum in Maryland.

He’s traveling to Baltimore on Friday to campaign on the issue with Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Last week, the mayor dispatched his top political aide, Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson, to mount a last-minute drive to back candidates around the country who are in tight races and who agree with Bloomberg’s views on gay marriage, education reforms and stricter gun laws.

Wolfson has taken a leave of absence to dispense more than $10 million of Bloomberg’s cash in the last couple of weeks before the election.
