COLLEGE: Clemson beats Wake Forest

Tajh Boyd threw for a school-record 428 yards with five touchdown passes as No. 14 Clemson (7-1, 4-1 ACC) scored a 42-13 victory last night at Wake Forest (4-4, 2-4).

NCAA data released showed the Penn State football team had a record graduation rate of 91 percent, tied for seventh with Rutgers among major college programs. The major college average was 68 percent.UConn’s basketball program — already banned from the postseason for failing to meet other academic standards — had a graduation rate of just 11 percent.

Former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu was among four ex-players arrested in Baton Rouge after police found them with marijuana at Mathieu’s apartment. Mathieu, a former Heisman Trophy finalist and cornerback known as “Honey Badger,” was dismissed from the team in August for failing a drug test.Also arrested was former QB Jordan Jefferson, who played this season with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.

Iona sophomore point guard Tavon Sledge, a transfer from Iowa State, has been granted a hardship waiver by the NCAA and will be eligible to play immediately.

GOLF: Tiger trails by 3 in Malaysia

Tiger Woods rolled in five birdies on the back nine and finished with a 5-under 66 to trail first-round leader Troy Matteson by three shots at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Jamie Donaldson of Wales shot a course-record 10-under par 62 in the first round of the BMW Masters in Shanghai. Rory McIlroy shot a 67 and blamed the air pollution over China’s financial capital for a headache he had in the latter stages of his round.

Inbee Park of South Korea shot a 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead over top-ranked Yani Tseng after the first round of the Taiwan Championship.

NBA: Mavericks suspend West

Mavericks guard Delonte West was suspended for the second time in as many weeks for conduct detrimental to the team, putting his future in Dallas in doubt. West has bipolar disorder.

Eddy Curry was claimed by the Mavericks off waivers. The former Knick was waived Wednesday by the Spurs after playing 14 games last season with the Heat.

TENNIS: Serena topples Azarenka

Serena Williams defeated top-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-4 at the WTA Championships in Istanbul. Williams improved to 11-1 overall against Azarenka, winning the last nine matches. Also advancing was Li Na, who defeated Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 6-3. Maria Sharapova, who was idle yesterday, has already qualified for the semifinals.

Rafael Nadal, out of action since June with a knee problem, will miss the ATP Tour Finals in London that start Nov. 5 and also next week’s Paris indoor event at Bercy, the ATP Tour said. Nadal’s withdrawal secured Juan Martin del Potro a spot in the ATP’s eight-man season-ender.

Margaret Osbourne duPont, who won more than 30 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles spanning three decades, died in El Paso, Texas. She was 94.

MLB: Mark Grace indicted in Arizona

Mark Grace, the former Diamondbacks first baseman and television analyst, was indicted on four felony counts of driving under the influence. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said Grace, 48, possibly could face up to 3.75 years in prison if he’s convicted.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said it’s unlikely the team can re-sign right-hander Kyle Lohse (16-3, 2.79 ERA) and doesn’t see a spot for Lance Berkman even in a reduced role.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to be ready for spring training.
