Robin Roberts calls in to Oprah on ‘GMA’

For the first time since she left on medical leave in August, “Good Morning America” viewers yesterday heard Robin Roberts’ voice.

“Thirty-five days ago, I had my bone-marrow transplant and it is a journey . . . ” Roberts said during a phone call to the show. “Some days I do feel like I am 35 days old, can’t get my head off the pillow, but those days are becoming fewer and fewer.”

Roberts, 51, is battling MDS, a rare blood disease. She underwent a bone-marrow transplant last month with cells donated by her sister.

“GMA’s” on-air crew wore the same green froggy slippers Roberts wears at home. Some feel this indicates the show is using her illness to get ratings.

ABC News president Ben Sherwood says that’s nonsense.

“We are doing exactly what Robin has wanted every step of the way,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“Every frame of video you see, every mention is our attempt to fulfill Robin’s wishes.”

“GMA” has been using a rotating roster of guest hosts, and yesterday Oprah Winfrey sat in for Roberts for half the show.

“I felt your presence when I walked into the studio,” Winfrey told Roberts. “I am so happy to be here with your family . . . You are here in spirit and we are so happy to have you call in this morning.”

Roberts plans to return to “GMA” once she’s strong enough.

“I can’t wait to come back,” she said during her call-in.
