A handful of “Hurricane Sandy” Twitter accounts emerged, attracting hundreds of thousands of followers.

“SpongeBob SquarePants” memes and jokes were also popular, as one of the characters on the animated series – the suit-wearing squirrel – is named Sandy.

“Dear Spongebob, please keep Sandy under control,” one Twitter user wrote. “She’s getting out of hand. Sincerely, Everyone.”

Other users posted images showing Sandy’s face superimposed over hurricane graphics.

The movie “Grease” was also a popular topic, given Olivia Newton-John’s turn as Sandy, the goody-goody turned leather-clad smoker in the 1978 film.

One Twitter image showed Newton-John’s face over a storm graphic, matched by the words “hopelessy devoted to ruining Halloween” – a play off the song “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from the movie.
