Andy in serious stump

WASHINGTON — Gov. Cuomo will be sweeping the state today to campaign for Democratic congressional candidates in races that are shaping up to be critical for any chance of the party taking back the House.

Cuomo will stump for Long Island Democrat Rep. Tim Bishop, who is in a rematch of his 2010 nail-biter against Republican Randy Altschuler.

The governor also heads upstate for incumbents Kathy Hochul, of Erie County, and Louise Slaughter, of Rochester. He will stump in Syracuse for Dan Maffei, who lost his seat in 2010 to Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle.

Democrats need 25 seats to take control of the House. New York lost more seats to the GOP than any state in 2010.

Cuomo, during an interview on Albany Talk Radio 1300 yesterday, said he will address “the effect of extremism in the congressional process and the byproduct of gridlock,” he said.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-LI), who is serving as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman, welcomed Cuomo’s help.

“He’s a rock star,” Israel said.

“He is one elected official you can put into any district and the people will respond.”
