Nassau coliseum on ice

The Issue: Brooklyn’s Barclays Center becoming the new home arena for the New York Islanders.

As a lifelong resident of Suffolk County and an Islander fan, I hate to see the team leave Nassau (“Brooklyn Power Play,” Editorial, Oct. 25).

A new arena there or even in Suffolk would have been ideal. That said, I am truly happy for the Islanders and their deal with the Barclays Center. Nassau County officials have no one but themselves to blame for the team’s departure.

For me, taking public transit to the arena is no hardship at all. Hopefully, other Islander fans feel the same way.

Let’s remember that geographically, Brooklyn is part of Long Island.

I have been a die-hard Islander fan since the glory days of the late ’70s and early ’80s. There is nothing wrong with the Nassau Coliseum.

It has the best sightlines for hockey of any local arena, and it is by far the loudest building in the league when it’s full.

The Islanders won four straight Stanley Cups on that ice — the last team to win four straight championships in any sport — and 19 straight playoff series, a record that will stand forever. Wayne Gretzky played in his first finals on that ice.

Now it’s history for the same reason Giants Stadium is history: no good reason.
